Storm Large tried to make the most of its Wild Card offer on America’s Got Talent on Tuesday night (August 24). Powerful rock singer and favorite of Simon Cowell, who secured a fan-voted offer in the quarter-finals thanks to her previous revamp of the jazz-pop standard “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” attempted to capture lightning in a bottle again, but the hill was a little harder to climb the second time around.
The 52-year-old added her own twist to a-ha’s “Take on Me”, but the slowed-down version of the classic 1985 track didn’t work for the judges.
But they all agreed that Large, who stood onstage in a stunning red dress, made a great voice and definitely played that role after biting the generic American vote.
Wearing a form-fitting red dress, the pink-haired singer turned her photo with a lounge piano cover of A-Ha’s iconic 1985 hit “Take on Me”, slowing the frantic Norwegian synth-pop melody into a almost an opera ballad which divided the jury. Model Heidi Klum praised “Jessica Rabbit” ‘s sexy look and Storm’ s “incredible” voice, a sentiment echoed by actress Sofia Vergara. The actress lamented, however, that compared to the singer’s first performance, A-Ha’s cover was “no better”.
Her biggest fan, Cowell, agreed, acknowledging that he “really, really” liked Large, but added that “there was a rawness about you at the first audition that kind of got lost. I don’t know what happened – you know, even your style. Everything was too sweet tonight, in my opinion.
