It was an impressive victory for De Rijcke and his coach, Gers Pardoel. 2018 was Pardoel’s first year as a coach. Drawing on De Rijcke and his other singers, Pardoel beat several more experienced coaches and sent his protégé to stardom.

After his victory, De Rijcke released his first single in April 2019. The single was called Straw House and was about a close relationship. Straw House was unique because it was De Riecke’s first original song. She used to cover songs. She may have written original songs before, but this was the first time she had recorded one.

But De Rijcke did not let the experience defeat him, instead resuming his training and having another try which succeeded beyond his wildest expectations. Sometimes a failure is what it takes for an artist, or anyone for that matter, to do the hard work necessary for the success of any chosen endeavor.

“Homesick” is a slow, plaintive piano ballad about a woman who is estranged from her lover and longs to come back to him, through difficult obstacles and a sense of loneliness. Just as De Rijcke kept moving towards her goal of winning the competition, the woman in this song won’t give up on her quest to find her lover.

For the semi-final, De Rijcke chose “Sober”, by American pop singer Demi Lovato. It’s a pretty sad song about Lovato’s problems with alcohol. She describes some of the behaviors she regrets and expresses her fear of not being able to stop drinking. Singing a song doesn’t mean you’re living the song, but it’s still a daring choice for someone as young as De Rijcke. She approached him with her usual coolness and composure.

De Rijcke’s last song on the show was “Grand Piano” by American Nicki Minaj. It is the song of a woman who questions her lover, if he was sincere or faithful in the relationship. The singer also spends a lot of time examining her whether or not she made any stupid decisions. It seems that difficult relationships are one of De Rijcke’s favorite subjects.

Despite the angst and sadness in each of her song choices, Jade De Rijcke triumphed over her obstacles, winning a competition that at one point seemed like she could never win.
