American romantic dance film written by Eleanor Bergstein and telling the story of Baby Frances Houseman, a young woman played by Jennifer Grey. She has a crush on Johnny Castle played by Partick Swayze. Patrick and Jennifer reunited in this production after co-starring a few years earlier on Red Dawn.

The film begins with Baby as she has to spend one last summer of vacation at a resort in the Catskills with her parents before she can join the peace corps. She was initially disappointed with the destination, but that all changed when she met Johnny, the resort’s dance coach.

The two fall in love and while Baby’s parents forbid her from seeing Johnny, she’s determined to help him perform at the last big ball of the summer. This movie captured many hearts around the world when it was released, with everyone trying to find a love like Baby and Johnny.

Initially, screenwriter Bergsteins wrote the screenplay for Michael Douglas’s It’s My Turn, but eventually it will be slightly modified and transformed into the story to become Dirty Dancing.

Directed by Emile Ardolino and produced by Linda Gottlieb, filming took place in North Carolina, Mountain Lake, and Virginia. The film premiered at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival a few months before it hit theaters on August 21, 1987.

The film brought in about $214 million and was the first film to sell more than a million copies for home video. Critics gave the film positive reviews, particularly the performances of Gray and Swayze, with Gray being nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
The Dirty Dancing soundtrack, created by Jimmy Lenner, is one of the most successful soundtracks in history, spawning two multi-platinum albums and a single. The Time of My Life, performed by Bill Medley and Jeniffer Warnes, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and the Grammy Award.

The film’s continued popularity made Patrick Swayze a worldwide star as he became the new heart of Hollywood, landing the lead role in the 1990 hit, Ghost. Jennifer, too, would go on to land prominent roles in later films, such as the 1992 film, Wind.

Dirty Dancing revived the sequel almost twenty years later in 2004 and a theatrical version sold out in the European, Australian and North American arenas. The movie still reminds everyone that love is out there and we can all find it in the most unlikely of places.
