Hours after Russia launched a “special military operation” against Ukraine, in the midst of chaos, lovers Yaryna Arieva and Sviatoslav Fursin decided to quickly get married. Previously, the couple planned to get married on May 6 and held their wedding ceremony at a restaurant with a “very, very cute” terrace overlooking the Dnieper River.
On the first day of their marriage, the couple took up rifles, preparing to defend Ukraine, their homeland.
Before that, facing escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, like many other Ukrainians, Arieva and Fursi signed up to join the Territorial Defense Forces. This is a branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, consisting mainly of volunteers.
After receiving their respective weapons, the newlyweds will head to their European Solidarity Party office for a rally.
“For now, we are here and we are doing everything we can. So there’s a lot of work to be done, but I still hope that everything will be okay,” Arieva said, adding that some ordinary people who are not part of the defense force also came to receive guns.
As Russia attacked Ukraine Thursday, Yaryna Arieva and Sviatoslav Fursin rushed to tie the knot with the sound of air raid sirens ringing in their ears.
